Connected cars – you’re hearing more and more about them. As part of the wider trend of connecting devices to the internet (the Internet of Things), virtually all modern vehicles and commercial vehicles are now equipped with the capability to exchange data via the internet.
In the case of ‘connected cars’, the vehicles are fitted with a SIM card at the factory, have an internet connection and collect data. The data is transmitted via the internet to the manufacturer, for example to carry out updates or monitor the car’s technical condition. Data can also be shared with other parties, such as the dealer and/or the end user. The end user can view this data via an app, which provides insight into the car’s location, technical condition, maintenance history and fuel consumption.
That’s great for end users, but what about fleet managers? After all, the data from connected cars isn’t yet accessible to you as a car hire or leasing company. And… those who fall behind might soon find themselves without a fleet!
Rental Tracker has been working hard to ensure that you, as a fleet manager, can also benefit from connected data without the need for additional hardware. Over the past year, in collaboration with our IT partner and a leading supplier of vehicle data, we have been working hard to connect with connected cars – both literally and figuratively. And we’ve succeeded!
This means that we can receive data from your connected cars and display it on your own Rental Tracker portal. What’s more, Rental Tracker Connect now enables fleet managers to collect data from connected cars alongside Rental Tracker data in a single central location. In this way, we can also provide you, as a fleet manager, with insights into your connected cars.
In short: all the information that the driver can see on the vehicle’s dashboard – such as mileage, fuel level, fuel consumption, maintenance alerts and tyre pressure – is now also available to you, as a rental or leasing company, via our portal.
However, the speed and accuracy of the real-time tracking function depend heavily on the make of car. Furthermore, connected cars do not yet allow for monitoring of driving behaviour or immobilisation. Connected cars certainly do not offer the many advantages provided by our hardware; Rental Tracker Connected should therefore be seen as a useful addition!
